Because of his previous travels in Europe and his friendly relations with the government and prominent citizens in Paris. Franklin served from 1776 to 1778 on a commission to France charged with the critical task of gaining French support for American independence. French aristocrats and intellectuals supported Franklin as the personification of the New World Enlightenment. Benjamin Franklin also helped negotiate the Treaty of Paris in 1783 with Great Britain ending the American Revolutionary War and finalizing the United States ownership of a vast territory between the Atlantic coast and the Mississippi River.
