before: few boundaries for those in border states who were trapped between bands of ruthless guerilla soldiers like Quantrill. Him and his confederate soldiers did terrible things. In 1863, a union commander took some of their wives/sisters. Five of them died in a federal building collapse.

during: Quantrill burned Lawrence and wreaked destruction in other parts of the state. He executed 183 men and boys.

result: Union evacuated many from parts of Missouri that bordered kansas
