The US was shock because they didn’t think the USSR would have the capability of nuclear weaponry so soon. This led to the arrestation of the physicist Klaus Fuchs for spying for the USSR and giving them top secret information about the US’s progress. This also eventually led to the Americans detonating the first hydrogen bomb.
