Genoa allies with Michael VIII Palaiologos, emperor of Nicaea, who wanted to restore the Byzantine Empire by recapturing Constantinople. Constantinople was recaptured on July 25. Balance of favor tips from Venice, who had gained control over a large portion of the Eastern Mediterranean after their role in the Fourth Crusade, to Genoa. This occurs by Genoa gaining free trade rights in the Nicaean Empire and many ports in the Aegean Sea. Also become one of only two states, along with Pisa, to have trading rights in the Black Sea.
