1 agos 1605 año - Eastward Ho! on the Union
Descripción:
Two years after King James gained kingship over England, Ben Johnson, George Chapman, and John Marston witnessed the first performance of their play Eastward Ho! This was a comedy written with contemporary references which are illuminating towards what people thought of the union at the time.
An extract from the play which discusses the benefits of living in the American colonies:
"And then you shal live freely there, without Sergeants, or Courtiers, or Lawyers, or Intelligencers – onely a few industrious Scots perhaps, who indeed are disperst over the face of the whole earth. But as for them, there are no greater friends of Englishmen and England, when they are out an't, in the world, then they are. And for my part, I would a hundred thousand of them were there, for wee are all one Countrymen now, yee know; and wee shoulde finde ten times more comfort of them there, then wee do here. "

What does this say about peace?
Anti- Scottish sentiment still existed among the English even while they shared one King. While national peace had been established, the everyday conflicts between the two peoples had not ceased to exist. However, the anti-Scottish jokes within the play lead to the imprisonment of Johnson and Chapman. This reveals a legal harshness on any form of conflict or dislike between the two nations.
