Northern deomcrats rejected Jefferson Davis's proposal to protect slavery in the territories. Many from southern states quit the meeting. THere was a second convention. Northern and midwestern delegates nominated Stephen Douglas for pres. Southern democrats met separately and nominated John C. Breckinridge (vice president) for pres

Significance: democrats were the only remaining party with bases in both the north and south, republicans sense victory (they begin courting white voters w/ a free soil platform that was against slavery+racial equality)(republicans chose lincoln for their candidate as he was more moderate on slavery than the best-known republicans and he had an egalitarian image for lower class and midwestern ppl)
