Herod the Great and Jesus Chronological, Historical and Archaeological Evidence, by Gerard GertouxAlthough Josephus dates Herod's victory in July 37 BCE, he fixes the beginning of his effective reign in 36 BCE, as he states that Herod ended a Hasmonean era started 126 years earlier (Jewish Antiquities XIV:490). However, as he dates the beginning of the period in 162 BCE the reign of Herod started therefore in -36 (= -162 + 126).
