It was 12:25 PM on October 20, 2022, a day that would soon brand itself in the hearts and minds of all citizens within the Neobro Empire. The nation’s newest province, Handrea, which had just recently been annexed following the immense success of Operation Passionflame, was possibly beginning the process of securing its independence. Governor-Colonel Amanda Exilamina, a partisan fighter who fought on the side of Imperial troops during the war, had requested a special session of the provincial legislature to be conducted at around 5:30 PM that should be attended by the region’s military leader; General Olgo Messigna. This sort of scenario was bone-chillingly similar to a previous circumstance that took place back in February, the Relatoria Crisis, which did not yield good results for the Empire. This time, though, Imperial authorities saw the writing on the wall early. Contrary to the mass panic that engulfed Relatoria in the hours leading up to its independence, General Messigna directed Imperial troops in the area to begin evacuating important figures and those who wished to leave the province itself. As of yet, there was still no indication that Handreline independence was on the table, but it was seeming more plausible by the minute, particularly when Governor-Colonel Exilamina told General Messigna that any talk between the two should be saved for the assembly. There was no turning back now; the Handrea Crisis had begun.

Still, while the Handrelines had shown themselves in wanting to help the Empire in every way possible, they were still about to do something within their provincial legislature that would most definitely not be in the Empire’s best interests. Again, while there was no guarantee that a vote for independence was to be held at Eximamina’s direction, everybody knew deep down that it was going to happen. Even with this, and even while actively arranging the evacuation of thousands of people, General Messigna was still in constant communication with Exilamina, who was still his good friend. If Handreline independence was what was going to end up happening, he could at least make it so that the Empire’s last actions in the area were those that made sure that their province was alright and remaining well. When 5:30 PM rolled around, Messigna arrived, having felt prepared with the actions he had preemptively taken, witnessed, on the Empire’s behalf, unsurprisingly, the unanimous vote for the independence of Handrea.

The Emperor himself had been briefed on the situation before, and was watching the event live from the Imperial Capitol Building back in Citus. From there, he gave his authorization to Messigna to recognize the vote as legal. The Handrelines had chosen the path they wanted to take, citing that while Imperial rule was not deprecating whatsoever, they still had their own interests as their own people, and felt like the same was true for the Empire. The last remaining Imperial citizen to leave the now independent Handreline Island Republic was General Messigna himself, after already dismissing everyone else he could think of to go to other parts of the Empire. His good friend, now Honorable Speaker Amanda Exilamina, had taken away yet another one of the few places he got to call his home, and a place he cherished more than anything. Indeed, preparations had been taken to ease the blow to both Messigna and the entire Neobro Empire, but no amount of preparation would end up doing anything. The Empire had lost yet another part of itself, the third time in the same year.
