1 ene 1960 año - The Presidential Election of 1960

Descripción:

The 1960 presidential election was one of the most closely contested in history. Republican Richard M. Nixon and Democrat John F. Kennedy ignored civil rights topics during the campaign, fearful of losing Southern votes. Civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. was arrested at an Atlanta sit-in in October of that year. When word reached the Kennedy campaign, two advisers, Harris Wofford and Sargent Shriver, arranged for the candidate to telephone King's wife, Coretta Scott King, to express sympathy. Meanwhile, Robert F. Kennedy summoned the case's judge.

After the Kennedy brothers' display of support, Martin Luther King, Sr. declared, "It's time for all of us to take off our Nixon button." Because state Democratic parties controlled the electoral process in the South, Jackie Robinson and other African Americans backed the Republican candidate. Since the days of Abraham Lincoln, emancipation, and the Fifteenth Amendment, Republicans have attracted African American votes. That history of support has now evaporated, since Kennedy won the presidency with 68 percent of the black vote.
