Roanoke is a city in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia and the first English settlement in the New World. It was founded by English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh in august 1585. In 1587, Raleigh dispatched a new group of 115 colonists to establish a colony on Chesapeake Bay. The group was led by an artist and friend of Raleigh named John White, who had accompanied the previous expedition to Roanoke. They ordered 12 people to assist in the settlement, but when the group arrived on July 22, 1587, they found nothing except a skeleton that may have been the remains of one of the English troops.
