By this time, the black death had reached Venice and Genoa. A few weeks later it appeared in Pisa and from this place it began to spread inland rapidly and maliciously. These cities had extremely popular trading ports, which is why the plague spread so quickly in the country. Since so many good were travelling around then entire country, the possibility of having one with the disease on it was very likely. Simply coming in contact with these items would give someone the plague. This contagiousness is what, in time, killed about 1/3 of Italy. It is estimated that most cities' populations were reduced about 60% from the plague.
