Stalin also set up Comecon (Council of Mutual Economic Assistance) in1949 to co-ordinate the production and trade of the Eastern European countries.
It appeared rather like an early communist version of the European Union.

However, Comecon favoured the USSR far more than any of its members.
For example, in the exchange of Soviet oil, the Eastern European countries were required to sell resources, such as uranium and coal, to the Soviet Union at prices well below world market rates.
