8 mayo 1887 año - Dawes Act of 1887

Descripción:

The Dawes Act was created by Henry Dawes for the president to survey Indian tribes and land. The president wanted to divide the land into allotments for individual Indians to live. The Indians who accepted the allotments and lived away from their tribe were granted United States citizenship. The goal of this act was to try and assimilate Indians into American culture and norms. The new opened up land of the Indians would then be sold to non native Americans. The Dawes Act is important because it expanded white land and eliminated elements of Native American culture. The US managed to take over two thirds of Indian land.
