Exact date. Cortés only took parts of the established Mesoamerican routes in some of his trips due to the developing political and military conditions. However, it is known that in the way back from his encounter with Narváez, he took a similar route to the one of his first trip to Tenochtitlan passing through Xalapa, Xico, Ixhuacan, Texutla, Xocotlan, Iztacmaxtitlan, then through Tlaxcallan territory, and possibly arriving to Tenochitlan through the north of the valley. Between May and September 1520, smallpox had spread from the coast to the province of Tepeaca and Tlaxcala.
