30 agos 1520 año - First report sent of smallpox in New Spain (Cozumel)
Descripción:
Fecha Exacta. Judge Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón who travelled with Panfilo de Narvaez fleet, reports to Charles V describing how in Fernandina (Cuba), there was already a crisis and a lack of indigenous population due to the smallpox epidemic. It is interesting to notice that he also describes that at the arrival to Cozumel there were already “muy poquitos indios naturales porque la mayor parte se habian muerto de viruelas que los indios de la dicha isla Ferdinandina, que con los españoles fueron, les habían pegado”. This means that smallpox had already devastated Cozumel before the arrival of the Narváez fleet to Veracruz.
