9 oct 1781 año - Patriot Lt John Talbird's House Burned

Patriot Lt John Talbird was wounded when Tories invaded Hilton Head Island. The Tories with orders to burn everything, marched to Talbird's home finding his wife in the front yard. Mrs Talbird pregant and expecting any time recoginzed the Tory leader as her brother-in-law. The Tory commander order Talbird's slaves and some of his Tories to remove all the contents of the home to an oak tree 100 yards away. Once removed, the house was burned and the slaves taken by the British to be sold in the West Indies. Some of the Talbird's slaves were in the field and hid from the British. They then built a log cabin with a thatch palmetto roof where Mrs. Talbird gave birth to a son on 19 Oct 1781. The Talbird oak tree still stands today.
