EVENT
People/Party: Massachusetts State Government
Location: Massachusetts
Impact: Implementation and adoption of the Australian/secret ballot

DETAILS
Before adoption of the secret ballot, voters voted by voice (viva voce) or through a ticket system (non-secret ballot). Because of this, voting took place in public and voter's choices were known by everyone around or involved. The 1889 Massachusetts Gubernatorial Election was the first election that adopted the use of the Australian/secret ballot. Under this system, governments listed all legal nominated candidates for office on am official printed ballot and took place in a quite indoor environment. This system allowed for privacy in voting for individualistic interests rather than publicly announced communal interests. Proving itself popular, this system spread across the other states soon after. Kentucky was the last state to host via voce voting in Owensboro on December 5, 1892.
