Loyalist Maj William "Bloody Bill" Cunningham's Tories on the "Bloody Scout' disguised as Whig militiamen began murdering Patriots in their homes. Lt Col Edward Hampton was surprised and murdered who stopped for breakfast at a house while enroute to Baylis Earle's Plantation.
