On July 21st, the British transport HMS Glasgow Packet became stuck on a sand bar at Spencer's Inlet (now Dewee's Inlet). On board were 43 men of the Royal Highland Emigrants, six sailors, and two black boatswains. On July 22, HMS St. Lawrence arrived in the area to rescue the ship. Just as it reached the bar, the South Carolinians set fire to HMS Glasgow Packet.
