Young Ayer was passing near the home of Mr. Cogdell then occupied by a man named Cotton. Ayer learned the Tories murderd Mr Cotton and was attempting to pass by the Tories. The Tories gave chase thinking he wanted to warn the militia but he made good his escape though a marsh leaving the Tories stuck in the mud.
