Wazir Ali Khan, the fourth Nawab of Awadh, with the help of the
British, had ascended the throne in September 1797.
However, in January 1799, he killed a British resident, Geogre Frederik
Cherry, who had invited him to lunch.
The whole incident became famous as the Massacre of Benares.
