Upon taking the throne, the Mughal Empire experienced a cultural golden age under Shah Jahan, such as the construction of Taj Mahal and palaces. However, he demanded heavy taxes on the people to pay for the projects. His need for money was accompanied by a series of religious wars, since he did not practice religious tolerance.
