Johnny Depp generated more money for US cinema owners in 2007 than any other Hollywood star, according to an annual survey.

The poll, conducted by Quigley Publishing Co every year since 1932, revealed that the star of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End and Sweeney Todd beat out fellow A-listers Will Smith, Tom Cruise and George Clooney.

Depp took the accolade after his performances as cavalier Captain Jack Sparrow and murderous Sweeney Todd persuaded film-goers to buy more than $340m (£172m) in tickets across the US. This was the second time in a row that Depp topped the table following the box office triumph of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest in 2006.
