The Germans set up a plan to attack France. They put up forts all around the city of Verdun with hopes that France will put all its resources into defending it. Then when all of France comes to defend it, they would be annihilated. This was fought for nine years killing over 300,000 soldiers on both sides. At the end of the battle, the city of Verdun was known to the French as a symbol of the sacrifice many soldiers made.
