Since the pope called for a holy war, some priests preached that knights (who were believed to be the most sinful people) could be forgiven of their sins by applying their trade to a holy war.
Some crusaders believed that they were bringing about the end times or apocalypse. They hoped that their efforts would cause a Christian kingdom to arise in the Middle East before the second coming of Christ. Some believed that much of the world would be saved before the coming of Christ.
