The Dakota’s reservation was recently cut in half, and annuities were late. The traders refuse to extend any more credit, and the Dakota are running out of food.
4 Dakota go out to hunt and kill 5 white men. A society among the Dakota to go to war against the U.S. government gains power and convinces Little Crow, Medicine Bottle, Shakopee, and Big Eagle to lead them to war. Most Dakota do not want to go to war, and the army is mostly young men. They go to Lower Sioux Agency and attack, killing hundreds of white men in the first few days.
