With 300,000 men, Chinese forces attacked United States and South Korean positions, forcing them back. China was now officially in the Korean War. The only possible way for the United States and other forces to win was to use atomic bombs and increase their amount of troops. Truman ruled out both of these options. MacArthur was furious, as he did not support Truman's idea of a limited war. Truman then fired MacArthur over insubordination after an angry letter MacArthur wrote to the House became public. This enraged the American public, who viewed MacArthur as a national hero.
