The strike started due to wage cuts for railroad workers working for Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Companies. The workers started their strike on July 14, 1877. State Militias were called in to end the strike, but their morality prevented them from shooting. By then, the strike had moved to many other states. The strike was ended 45 days after it started by Federal Troops. The Railroad Strike caused 5-10 million dollars in damage and started the U.S. National Guard.
