Of many Dakota 303 men were sent to military court, convicted of murdering civilians. The missionary Henry Whipple urged the President to review the convictions and give sentences to 264 prisoners, and he did. He also signs the condemning of 39 men, to death or hanging. One man is reprieved before the hanging. With 38 people hanged, it is known as the largest mass killing in the U.S.
