During the morning of August 23rd, the Dakota engaged New Ulm’s defenders in a battle. The Dakota shot at the defenders windows and doorways. The smoke struck fear and confusion to New Ulm, but the defenders held their ground. In one last desperate attempt, the defenders set fire to the building the Dakota used as cover. The Dakota retreated at sunset, leaving 32 townspeople dead and more than 60 wounded. Most of the town was in ruins.
