The people of New Ulm heard about the Dakota attacking people so they built barricades to prevent the Dakota from destroying them and their city. Approximately 100 Dakota soldiers attacked New Ulm that day. About 2 hours later the Dakota retreated because of heavy rains. Word reached St. Paul and Governor Alexander Ramsey sends Henry Sibley to gather troops and pursue the Dakota.
