On the third of March, 1865, the Freedmen's Bureau was established by Congress. Its aim was to help the millions of former slaves and poor whites in the South. It assisted in finding work. Former slaves would work on plantations, enter labor contracts, and have special courts. The Bureau worked with charities to educate former slaves.
