7 mayo 1915 año - German U-boat attacks Lusitania
Descripción:
The loss of the British ocean liner Lusitania by a German U-boat on May 7, 1915, contributed indirectly to the United States' entrance into World War I. The Lusitania was sailing from New York to Liverpool in May 1915, carrying 1,959 passengers and crew. The British Admiralty warned the Lusitania to avoid the area after merchant ships were sunk there and reports of submarine activity there, advising her to use the evasive tactic of zigzagging, changing course every few minutes at irregular intervals to confuse any attempt by U-boats to plot her course for torpedoing. The ship's commander, William Thomas Turner, opted to disregard these suggestions, and the vessel was assaulted on the afternoon of May 7. A torpedo hit the ship and detonated amidships on the starboard side, followed by a larger explosion, perhaps caused by damage to the steam engines and pipelines. The Lusitania sank in less than 20 minutes, killing 1,198 passengers. The loss of the ship and so many of her passengers, including 128 Americans, sparked outrage in the United States, and it was widely believed that the country would declare war, but the US government maintained its neutrality
