In early 1990, Saddam Hussein threatened the world’s oil supply when his Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait and took over its capital. On January 16, the U.S., with support from other nations, launched airstrikes against Iraqi military targets in Baghdad. More than 40,000 strikes took place over a five-week period, wearing down the Iraqi spirit. Unfortunately, many civilians were also killed. The ground war began on February 24. It was a quick victory for the Allied troops against Hussein. 100,000 Iraqi soldiers were dead compared to 300 Allied troops. Hussein and his men set fire to the oil fields in Kuwait, causing long-term effects on the environment.
