It is generally held to be the most famous of a number of narratives written by former slaves during the same period.Douglass's autobiography is created out of the belief that exposing the truth will eventually bring about justice. To Douglass, a straightforward depiction of the true nature of slavery is one of the most effective ways to combat the injustice of the institution.
