- Dayananda Saraswati founded the samaj which was revivalist in nature with the vision of India as a classless & casteless society

- Saraswati gave a slogan - "Back to the Vedas"
- call for the revival of Vedic learning and Vedic purity of religion not Vedic times itself i.e he accepted modernity and displayed a patriotic attitude to national problems
- criticizes the Purana and ignorant priests

- advocated that God, Soul, and Matter are distinct ---> denouncing Maya and Moksh concept, Hindu Orthodoxy, caste rigidities, untouchability

- After the death of Sarawati, split into the #College Party(which wanted modern western education)
# Mahatma Party(wanted Gurukul, teaching of Vedas)
