Raymond of Tripoli had been captured and wanted revenge. Harim refused to recognise overlordship of new ruler in Aleppo and look to the Franks for protection. Philip of Flanders and Raymond went to help.
Army met Saladin at Ascalon. Christians severely outnumbered but Saladin didn't leave any of his men to watch Ascalon. Raynald called the Templars and they struck the Muslims. Saladin caught by surprise and defeated, with no chance of a counter-attack.
