James Garfield defeats Winfield Hancock in the U.S Presidential election. Although his presidency lasted only 200 days, he authored the legislation that established the Bureau of Education. He worked against political corruption, regaining trust in the presidency after the rough reconstruction period. He was also a proponent of returning the US to the gold standard and wanted to pay all debts honorably, holding himself as an honest man.
