From 15 April 1989 - 4th of June 1989 students led protests in the capital of China and in other cities such as Hong Kong and Shanghai. The students protested freedom and democratic reform, however the peaceful demonstrations led to the Chinese government intervening with "martial law" (direct military control) rolling tanks and armed soldiers into the square, opening fire on the crowds that gathered. The Chinese government have since tried to downplay the severity of the massacre, mentioning that the death toll was only 241 however it is considered to be more than 10, 000.
