Civil Rights leaders began to march for the death of Jimmy Lee Jackson, which resulted in lots of violence toward the marchers. Because of these events, President Johnson promised to propose the Voting Rights Act, which was proposed a week after these events. Overall, the law prohibited the denial of voting rights based on race. It required local jurisdictions to clear any new voting policies and practices with the federal government before implementing them. The law was passed in 1965, which was a groundbreaking change for voting rights.
