-William Tweed was a NYC alderman who later gained a seat of the NY Board of Supervisors
-he embezzled between $25 and $45 million dollars from NY taxpayers through political corruption
-He was convicted in 1877 and sent to jail
-He escaped and got all the way to Spain, but was recaptured b/c people recognized him from Nast's political cartoons
-instead of churches and charities helping the poor, political bosses would help them find homes, jobs, apply for citizenship and voting rights in-exchange for their votes
-The organizations of political bosses were called political machines
