October 27th, 1961

After an American reported was denied re-entry to West Berlin and arrested in East Berlin, the United States deployed tanks on the border between West and East Berlin at checkpoint Charlie; soon after, the Soviets also deployed tanks. The tanks stood off for a few hours until the United States and Soviet Union came to the tables and backed off. This event is significant because up until this point, this is the closest the Cold War went from being a cold war to a hot war.
