This was the ammendment to the constitution that finally ended the practice of legalized slavery. It wasn't ratified until December 6 1865. This amendment, which was a passion project of President Lincoln, did not come to fruition until after he was assassinated in April of the same year. Former confederate states were required to ratify the amendment in order to regain representation in the government.
