Jim Crow laws were adopted to separate the African Americans from the whites in places such as school, business, restrooms, etc. Poll taxes were required to be paid and a literacy test had to be taken for African Americans. The grandfather clause was implemented by some states which meant that if their grandfather didn't vote then they didn't have to vote.
