Descripción:
Amos n Andy was a very popular radio sitcom show that focused on two Black characters who went through daily life situations. The show was written, produced and voiced by two White actors Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll. For the poster, the actors are pictured in Blackface. The show aired from 1928 to 1960, and from 1951 - 1953 a television show aired. For the television show most of the characters were played by African American actors.
The show was eventually taken off the air in large part due to efforts by the NAACP. Even though the NAACP fought for the show to be off the air, it was very popular and thus promoted harmful stereotypes of African Americans to be lazy and ignorant.
One of the non lead characters on the show Kingfish had a wife and her name was Sapphire Stevens. Sapphire was constantly disgusted with Kingfish, always nagging him, always dissatisfied with him, and she was just an angry woman.
In her essay, "The Oppositional Gaze," bell hooks mentions her and many other Black woman being disgusted with the character and it's portrayal of Black women.
