With the thought that all criminals were generally flawed and needed to be seperated from society, and the inability to do this in their American colonies, the British turned to a new place for prisoners. With jails being too expensive they searched in the other direction and found Australia. They then had guards take care of them that were generally regarded as sadistic. This was the establishment of the first colony in Australia. Key concept 4.3
