In 2002, the style of electronic dance music that made use of syncopated rhythmic patterns and consist sub-bass similar to grime and dub reggae split off to form the genre called dubstep. Dubstep was first seen in South London but it mainly draws influence from the Jamaican sound system from the early 1980s. As the genre grew more distinct from other genres and gained a larger variety of songs, different subgenres began to form. One such genre was called "brostep" was a more heavy metal and electronic dance inspired style that was popularized by the artist Skrillex. The evolution from the simplistic turntable style of the Jamaican sound system to the harsh electronic distortion of brostep shows the indluence that improved electronic instrumentation had on the way that music has been composed over time.
