In the first official battle of WWI, The 6th French army attacked the right flank of the Germany 1st army. Germany had marched through Belgium with force and was advancing towards Northeastern France, near Paris, so the French spared an army and set plans to attack the German's right flank. This ended poorly for the Germans because their leader disobeyed orders to fall back and support other forces. Eventually the Germans were ordered to retreat as the French stood strong and forced them back. This battle was of high significance because it stopped the first German push into France. It also laid down the beginning of the entrenchment positions that lasted till the end of the war.
