As Gretel and Bruno watch the people on the other side of the fence, they find new things about the people that are really different from themselves. For one, these people are so dirty that they are covered in dirt. Bruno and Gretel are very lucky to not know what this feels like, so they don't understand that it isn't their fault. Bruno also notices that none of the people look happy at all, and they all look small and skinny. Both Bruno and Gretel decide that they don't want to play with the children they see.
