Urging the purification of Washington and an end to military reconstruction. Nominated Horace Greeley for the presidency, which he lost. They were disgusted by grant's scandals and corruption, frightened Republicans (bc thought their beliefs were close to Democrats' and might leave their party to support the enemy)into passing the General Amnesty act which gave all but 500 former Confederate soldiers freedom from their prior political disabilities. They reduced Civil War tariffs, and encouraged civil service reform in Grant's administration.
